Pitched-Roof Living Room

A no-frills 1978 Michigan ranch is reinvented in an architectural vein reminiscent of the South of France. Raising the roof, in this case, proved the key to reinventing the house. Sawing off the existing roof and rebuilding it at a higher angle not only added airiness and a fresh facade, but it also altered the home's architectural style, transforming it from ranch to French country.

Welcoming Front Entry

Front doors are an easy way to update your entry. This front door and sidelights are original, but the hardware is new. The careful placement of folding theater chairs separates the entry from the living room. An awkward large closet separating the living room from the entry was removed, instantly improving the room's flow.

Colorful Dining Room

The living room's raised ceiling extends into the dining room, making the small space live large. Dining room furniture ties the space together. A china cabinet displays the homeowner's eclectic pottery collection. The flooring was replaced with Southern heartwood pine, which contributes to the cottage feel.

Galley Kitchen

Use this space to get ideas for your own kitchen remodeling project. This galley kitchen was gutted and updated with new cabinetry, appliances, and black honed-granite countertops. Pale blue walls draw the eye to the pottery in the dining room. A wall was opened to create a pass-through to the living room, giving the small kitchen a more spacious feel and letting the homeowner be a part of the action when she entertains.

Master Bedroom

Raising the floor of the former garage to the same level as the rest of the house provides a smooth transition to the new master suite. Soft green and brown hues, sophisticated bedroom furniture, and a simple, uncluttered design help transform the 600-square-foot space into a tranquil sanctuary.

Master Bath

The master bathroom was gutted and enlarged. Ebony-stained bathroom vanities and mirrors and gold honed-marble countertops and floors create regal simplicity.

Screened Porch

Screened in porches, such as this one off the den, afford hours of relaxation—sans mosquitoes. The homeowner says no Michigan cottage should be without one. Screens extend from floor to ceiling for seamless views of the backyard, and a vaulted ceiling keeps the space light and airy.

Painted Brick House Exterior

Painting the ranch's exterior brick yellow enhances its freshly acquired Provençal appeal, as do new windows and a dormer. The dormer brings more light into the living room and completely changes the facade.

A basic ranch was remodeled to become a spacious retreat. The pitch of the roofline was raised and a dormer was added; new windows were installed and a screen porch was added; the floor of the sunken garage was elevated and the space was turned into the master suite and interiors were updated with new hardwood floors, fresh paint, an improved kitchen, and enlarged bathrooms.
